Judge slams Halifax police’s strip search that found drugs on accused in road rage case

Black Man Faces Unlawful Strip Search, Charges Stayed by Judge
In a dramatic turn of events, a Halifax-area man, Dante Warnell Cromwell, had over 20 charges dropped against him after a judge ruled he was unlawfully subjected to a strip search by Halifax Regional Police. The dramatic ruling was delivered by Judge Alonzo Wright in Halifax provincial court, sparking outrage and debate over police conduct.
Cromwell, 26, was embroiled in a case described by Wright as “extreme road rage,” where he faced charges of assault, drug trafficking, and firearms offences stemming from a concerning incident on April 16, 2023. The case took a controversial turn when it was revealed that Cromwell was strip searched by police, leading to the discovery of 41 baggies containing 25.5 grams of crack cocaine concealed around Cromwell’s midsection.
Judge Wright’s ruling highlighted the unlawfulness and humiliation Cromwell faced during the strip search, conducted by four white officers in the presence of Cromwell, a member of the Black community. The judge criticized the lack of grounds for the search, the invasive nature of the procedure, and the potential violation of Cromwell’s Charter rights.
Wright emphasized the detrimental impact of strip searches, particularly on marginalized communities like the Black community, and expressed disappointment in Halifax Regional Police for not learning from past criticisms regarding strip searches. In a powerful statement, the judge emphasized the need to uphold trust in the justice system and condemned the intrusive search that ultimately led to the stay of proceedings in Cromwell’s case.
Halifax Regional Police responded to the ruling, indicating they would review the case but refrained from further comment on the matter. The decision has sparked conversations around police conduct, racial profiling, and the protection of individuals’ rights in legal processes.
The case of Dante Warnell Cromwell sheds light on the complexities of law enforcement practices and the impact of unlawful procedures on individuals’ lives. As the debate continues, the need for transparency, accountability, and respect for individuals’ rights remains paramount in maintaining trust and justice within the community.
