Canada honours and shows solidarity with refugees worldwide

Canada’s Unwavering Support for Global Refugees on World Refugee Day
Ottawa, June 20, 2024—In a heartfelt display of solidarity on World Refugee Day, Canada’s distinguished Ministers, Marc Miller, Mélanie Joly, and Ahmed Hussen, have come together to honour and stand in unity with millions of refugees around the world. Recognizing the dire circumstances faced by over 117 million forcibly displaced individuals due to various crises, including conflict, persecution, and natural disasters, the Canadian government underscores its unwavering commitment to addressing the pressing humanitarian needs of refugees.
With the global refugee population swelling to 43.4 million in 2023—a staggering 7% increase—Canada acknowledges the escalating global refugee crisis as one of the paramount challenges of our time. At the forefront of refugee resettlement efforts, Canada has emerged as a beacon of hope, pledging to welcome 12,000 refugees each from Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region over the next three years. Additionally, the nation remains committed to resettling vulnerable populations from the Americas, human rights defenders, and other at-risk individuals.
In tandem with governmental initiatives, Canada’s private sponsorship program continues to play a pivotal role in providing a safe haven for refugees. Collaborating with organizations such as the Rainbow Refugee Society, Canada has successfully resettled hundreds of LGBTQI+ refugees and their families. The impactful partnerships fostered by Canada not only exemplify compassion but also ignite a ripple effect of support for LGBTQI+ communities globally.
Recognizing the crucial role of host countries in supporting refugees, Canada extends its heartfelt appreciation to nations that have exhibited unwavering generosity and resilience. Through substantial international assistance funding, including $96 million to the UNHCR last year, Canada ensures that vulnerable populations have access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities.
Moreover, Canada’s investment of $75 million over six years in capacity-building initiatives across Latin America and the Caribbean underscores its commitment to fortifying regional responses to forced displacement and irregular migration. By proactively aiding countries in enhancing protection mechanisms and fostering integration for displaced populations, Canada drives lasting positive change in the region.
In a significant stride towards advancing education for refugee and displaced youth, Canada has announced funding support for Phase II of the Refugee Education Council—an advisory body comprising young individuals affected by displacement. Through strategic counsel and advocacy, the council aims to bolster education access for children and youth in refugee and displaced communities worldwide.
