Statement by Minister Miller on Canada Day

Title: Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marks Canada Day with Powerful Message
Toronto, July 1, 2024 – As Canada celebrates its national day, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, delivered an impactful statement emphasizing the importance of reflecting on our rights and responsibilities as Canadian citizens and recognizing the integral role of Indigenous Peoples in shaping the past, present, and future of the country.
Minister Miller highlighted the significance of understanding the histories and realities of Indigenous Peoples, who have been the caretakers of the land since time immemorial. He stressed the importance of advancing reconciliation with Indigenous communities and acknowledging their rights and contributions.
In an effort to promote reconciliation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship collaborated with Indigenous creators to produce the video “Welcome, there is room,” which is now featured at every citizenship ceremony nationwide. The Minister expressed his pleasure in witnessing newcomers take the oath of citizenship, describing it as a deeply moving experience that evokes a sense of pride in being Canadian.
The Minister also encouraged Canadians to participate in citizenship ceremonies in their communities and explore Canada Day celebrations happening across the country. He emphasized the significance of learning about Indigenous Peoples and cultures, embracing diversity, equity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism that make Canada unique.
Minister Miller concluded by extending his warm wishes for a Happy Canada Day, inviting all to celebrate and reflect on the shared values and love for the country that unite Canadians from all walks of life.
