Toronto, July 1, 2024 – Honoring Canada Day, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, highlighted the significance of understanding and celebrating the diverse histories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. In a statement, Minister Miller emphasized the importance of reflecting on the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship while acknowledging the vital role Indigenous Peoples play in shaping the past, present, and future of the country.
With a focus on advancing reconciliation, the Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to promote awareness and recognition of the rights and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. Through collaboration with Indigenous creators, a video titled ‘Welcome, there is room’ is now integrated into citizenship ceremonies nationwide, offering a direct insight into the experiences and voices of Indigenous Peoples for new Canadians.
As part of the Canada Day festivities, Minister Miller participated in a special citizenship ceremony at the Rogers Centre preceding the Toronto Blue Jays’ annual game, underscoring the significance of the citizenship oath-taking process. Encouraging participation in citizenship ceremonies as a means of experiencing the pride of Canadian identity, the Minister invited individuals to engage in upcoming ceremonies in their communities.
Expressing a message of unity and diversity, Minister Miller urged Canadians to learn more about Indigenous Peoples and cultures, emphasizing the values of inclusivity and multiculturalism that define Canada. Celebrating the collective love and respect for the country, the Minister encouraged all residents to embrace the spirit of giving back and welcoming newcomers who choose Canada as their home.
