Statement by Minister Miller on Canada Day

“Immersed in Unity: Celebrating Canada Day with Indigenous Recognition and Citizenship Ceremonies”
In an immersive celebration of freedom and shared values, Canada marked Canada Day on July 1st, reflecting on the essence of Canadian citizenship. The esteemed Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, highlighted the importance of understanding Indigenous histories and realities, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping Canada’s past, present, and future.
Minister Miller stated, “Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples is a collective responsibility for every Canadian. It is crucial that we acknowledge and appreciate the rights and invaluable contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.” As a testament to this commitment, Indigenous voices and experiences are now being directly shared with new Canadians through the evocative video, ‘Welcome, there is room,’ featured at citizenship ceremonies nationwide.
A momentous citizenship ceremony at the Rogers Centre, held before the Toronto Blue Jays’ annual Canada Day game, set the stage for numerous similar events to take place throughout the country. The emotional oath-taking process symbolized a profound sense of belonging and unity, echoing the Minister’s sentiment that such ceremonies represent the pinnacle of his role.
Encouraging all Canadians to partake in upcoming citizenship ceremonies in their regions, Minister Miller emphasized the importance of deepening pride in Canadian identity and fostering community engagement. As diverse as Canada itself, these celebrations underscore the nation’s unique blend of equity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism.
With Canada Day festivities in full swing, Minister Miller urged individuals to explore local events and engage with Indigenous cultures, reinforcing the notion of unity in diversity that defines the Canadian identity. He concluded by extending warm wishes for a joyous Canada Day, encapsulating the spirit of love and respect for a country that unites its people in celebration.
