**Headline: Canada Steps Up as Global Humanitarian Leader on World Refugee Day**
Ottawa, June 20, 2024 – In a powerful display of solidarity, Canada reaffirms its commitment to refugees worldwide on World Refugee Day. Ministers Marc Miller, Melanie Joly, and Ahmed Hussen of Immigration, Foreign Affairs and International Development respectively, came together to address the pressing international refugee crisis.
The trio reiterated the urgent need for collective action, given that over 117 million individuals have been uprooted from their homes due to persecution, conflict, and natural disasters. Shockingly, the global refugee population swelled by 7% in 2023, totaling 43.4 million people. The ministers underscored that the challenges faced by refugees are among the most pressing issues of our time.
Canada’s proactive approach includes plans to resettle 12,000 refugees from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific each over the next three years. The country will also continue to welcome vulnerable populations from the Americas, human rights defenders, and others in need. Furthermore, Canada is set to host more than 27,000 refugees through private sponsorship programs, collaborating with organizations like the Rainbow Refugee Society.
In a notable gesture of support, Canada provided $96 million in funding to the UN Refugee Agency last year, addressing emergency needs such as healthcare and education for vulnerable populations. Additionally, Canada is investing $75 million over six years to assist Latin America and the Caribbean in better tackling forced displacement and migration.
Recognizing that education is key to empowering refugee communities, Canada has allocated $450,000 to support Phase II of the Refugee Education Council, enhancing access to quality education for displaced youth globally.
In their closing remarks, the ministers lauded the resilience and invaluable contributions of refugees, acknowledging their profound impact in shaping communities. They praised the host countries for their unwavering support and vowed to stand as a beacon of hope for those seeking sanctuary and protection.
Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to leading by example in refugee resettlement, fostering partnerships within and beyond its borders to provide solace and opportunities for the most vulnerable.
