Man thought he was paying power bill by phone; he got a scammer instead

Beware of Sophisticated Scams: Nova Scotia Resident Falls Victim to Elaborate Fraud While Trying to Pay Utility Bill
When West Hants resident Drew Kaulback set out to pay his Nova Scotia Power bill, little did he know he was about to embark on a treacherous journey into the world of online scams. Like most people would, Kaulback searched online for the utility’s phone number and dialed the toll-free number that appeared as the top result.
To his dismay, the number turned out to be a cleverly disguised scam. The man who answered the call posed as a Nova Scotia Power representative and requested Kaulback’s account number and birthdate for identification. The scammer even went as far as proving his credibility by providing accurate information about Kaulback’s billing history, leaving Kaulback with a false sense of security.
Trusting the fraudster, Kaulback proceeded to disclose his credit card information for payment. However, when the scammer failed to process the payment and requested Kaulback to contact his bank, suspicions began to arise. It was only then, with the help of a vigilant bank representative, that Kaulback realized he had narrowly escaped a financial catastrophe.
Casey Spears of Nova Scotia Power emphasized the increasing prevalence of such fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals seeking to make legitimate payments. Jeff Horncastle from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warned against the common tactic of sponsored links in search engine results, urging caution and verification before providing personal information online.
Google, in response to the incident, highlighted its stringent policies against deceptive ads and scams, assuring immediate action to remove such misleading content.
Despite the close call, Kaulback remains vigilant and is taking steps to secure his accounts. This cautionary tale serves as a reminder for everyone to stay alert and exercise due diligence when engaging in online transactions.
