Statement by Minister Miller on Canada Day

**Celebrating Canada Day: A Day of Reflection and Reconciliation**
Toronto, July 1, 2024 – As Canadians across the country come together to celebrate Canada Day, it’s not just about fireworks and barbeques. It’s a day to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy, the rights and responsibilities that come with being Canadian, and the shared values that bind us together as a nation.
The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, emphasized the importance of understanding the histories and realities of Indigenous Peoples on this significant day. Acknowledging their role as caretakers of the land since ancient times and their integral part in Canada’s past, present, and future, Minister Miller highlighted the need for reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples as a collective responsibility for all Canadians.
In an effort to promote reconciliation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada collaborated with Indigenous creators to incorporate the voices and experiences of Indigenous Peoples directly into citizenship ceremonies. The video ‘Welcome, there is room’ is now being showcased at every citizenship ceremony nationwide, providing new Canadians with a deeper understanding of the Indigenous contributions to our country.
Minister Miller also attended a special citizenship ceremony at the Rogers Centre before the Toronto Blue Jays annual Canada Day game, underscoring the significance of newcomers taking their oath of citizenship on this day. He encouraged all Canadians to witness the pride and sense of belonging experienced during these ceremonies and to consider participating in one themselves.
As Canadians engage in Canada Day festivities, Minister Miller urged everyone to explore and learn more about Indigenous Peoples and cultures, and to extend a welcoming hand to those who have chosen Canada as their home. Emphasizing the diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism that define Canada, he reminded us that what unites us is our love and respect for this country.
Whether you’re a newcomer to Canada or have called it home for generations, today is a day to celebrate our shared identity as Canadians and to look towards the future with hope and unity. Happy Canada Day!
