Statement by Minister Miller on Canada Day

Title: Minister of Immigration Celebrates Canada Day with Citizenship Ceremonies and Indigenous Recognition
Toronto, July 1, 2024—The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, marked Canada Day with a heartfelt message reflecting on the freedoms and responsibilities of Canadian citizens. He emphasized the importance of understanding and honoring the histories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, who have been the stewards of this land since ancient times.
In his statement, Minister Miller highlighted the significance of advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and recognizing their vital role in shaping Canada’s past, present, and future. He underlined the government’s commitment to collaborating with Indigenous creators to share the stories and experiences of Indigenous Peoples directly with new Canadians.
As part of the ongoing efforts to promote reconciliation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship worked with Indigenous creators to produce a video titled ‘Welcome, there is room,’ now being shown at every citizenship ceremony nationwide.
Minister Miller had the privilege of attending a special citizenship ceremony at the Rogers Centre before the Toronto Blue Jays’ annual Canada Day game. He described the moment when newcomers take their oath of citizenship as profoundly moving and encouraged all Canadians to witness the experience at upcoming ceremonies in their areas.
Encouraging everyone to join in Canada Day celebrations, Minister Miller invited people to visit the Canadian Heritage website to learn about events in their communities. He expressed hope that the day’s festivities would reignite pride in being Canadian and inspire individuals to contribute to their communities, deepen their understanding of Indigenous Peoples, and welcome newcomers to the country.
Minister Miller concluded his message by emphasizing Canada’s values of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism, which unite its people in love and respect for the country. He closed with a heartfelt wish, “Happy Canada Day!”
