Title: Canada Day Celebrations Emphasize Unity, Diversity, and Indigenous Recognition
Toronto, July 1, 2024 – As Canadians across the country celebrate Canada Day, the focus this year is not only on freedom and citizenship but also on unity, diversity, and recognition of the Indigenous Peoples who have long been caretakers of the land.
The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, highlighted the importance of understanding the histories and realities of Indigenous Peoples in a statement released today. He emphasized the integral role that Indigenous Peoples play in Canada’s past, present, and future, encouraging all Canadians to work towards reconciliation.
In an effort to promote reconciliation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada collaborated with Indigenous creators to produce the video “Welcome, there is room,” which is now being showcased at every citizenship ceremony in the country. This initiative aims to directly share the voices and experiences of Indigenous Peoples with new Canadians.
Minister Miller also participated in a special citizenship ceremony held at the Rogers Centre before the Toronto Blue Jays annual Canada Day game, one of many ceremonies taking place nationwide. The ceremony marked a meaningful moment for newcomers as they took their oath of citizenship, representing a step towards embracing Canadian identity and values.
Encouraging Canadians to participate in citizenship ceremonies in their areas, Minister Miller emphasized the importance of celebrating and uniting as a diverse and inclusive nation. He urged individuals to learn more about Indigenous Peoples and cultures and to welcome those who have chosen Canada as their home.
As Canadians engage in Canada Day celebrations, the message of unity, diversity, and Indigenous recognition takes center stage, fostering a sense of pride in being Canadian and inspiring community engagement and inclusivity.
With a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism, Canada continues to stand out as a beacon of unity and acceptance. As we celebrate this day, let us reflect on what unites us – our shared love and respect for this country.
Happy Canada Day to all!
