Statement by Minister Miller on Canada Day

New Citizenship Initiative Celebrated on Canada Day in Toronto
Toronto, July 1, 2024—Marking Canada Day with a special focus on unity and responsibility, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, emphasized the importance of embracing the shared values that define being Canadian. In a statement, Minister Miller highlighted the significance of understanding Indigenous Peoples’ histories and acknowledging their essential role in shaping Canada’s past, present, and future.
Encouraging all Canadians to prioritize reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, Minister Miller stressed the need to recognize and appreciate the rights and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. As part of a dedicated effort to advance reconciliation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship collaborated with Indigenous creators to present the video ‘Welcome, there is room’ at citizenship ceremonies nationwide.
Celebrating Canada’s diversity and inclusivity, Minister Miller attended a special citizenship ceremony at the Rogers Centre ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Canada Day game, underscoring the emotional significance of welcoming new citizens into the Canadian family. Encouraging others to partake in similar ceremonies, Minister Miller invited all Canadians to experience the pride of becoming a citizen and connect with the cultural richness of Indigenous communities.
In the spirit of Canada Day celebrations, Minister Miller urged individuals to engage in community service, explore Indigenous cultures, and embrace newcomers choosing Canada as their home. Recognizing that unity is at the core of Canadian identity, he closed with a heartfelt wish for a Happy Canada Day, emphasizing the love and respect shared by all citizens for their beloved country.
