**Canada Stands Strong: Solidarity with Refugees On the Rise**
In a powerful display of unity with refugees worldwide, Canada makes a bold statement on this year’s World Refugee Day. The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, alongside Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly and Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen, declare their commitment to supporting refugees in need.
With over 117 million people displaced globally due to various crises, the refugee population continues to grow, reaching 43.4 million in 2023. Despite the challenges faced, Canada remains steadfast in its efforts to provide sanctuary and opportunities for those seeking refuge.
Canada’s proactive approach is highlighted by its plans to resettle 12,000 refugees from Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region over the next three years. Private groups in Canada also show their support by sponsoring over 27,000 refugees this year, including vulnerable LGBTQI+ individuals and their families.
Acknowledging the contributions of host countries that have supported refugees over the years, Canada remains committed to providing essential international assistance. Last year alone, Canada contributed $96 million to the UNHCR to address critical needs such as healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities for vulnerable populations.
Furthermore, Canada is investing in capacity-building projects across Latin America and the Caribbean to enhance countries’ abilities to respond to forced displacement and irregular migration. Initiatives in Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil aim to improve access to protection, strengthen asylum systems, and integrate migrants into local communities.
In a bid to enhance refugee education, Canada announced funding for the Refugee Education Council, a youth-led advisory body working to increase access to quality education for displaced children and youth in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America.
As Canada continues to lead by example in refugee resettlement, the government recognizes the resilience of refugees and their invaluable contributions to society. With unwavering support from people and organizations across the nation, Canada remains dedicated to offering protection and opportunities to those in need, both at home and worldwide.
