Minister Miller highlights Budget 2024 investments to support local performing arts and fairness for every generation

Title: “Montréal Receives Millions in Federal Investment for Cultural Arts and Community Development”
In an exciting development for the vibrant arts scene in Montréal, today the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a substantial federal investment of $31 million over two years for the Canada Arts Presentation Fund. This funding includes $800,000 earmarked to support TOHU, a renowned performing arts theatre, and the captivating circus programs of the Festival Montréal Complètement Cirque.
The Festival Montréal Complètement Cirque promises to showcase the thrilling talents of high-flying performers from Montréal and around the world, transforming venues, streets, parks, and even sidewalks into stages for an 11-day celebration of the circus arts. This initiative not only supports the local artists but also aims to create jobs, boost tourism, and unite communities through the shared enjoyment of Montréal’s rich arts and culture.
Minister Miller highlighted the significance of investing in cultural industries, emphasizing their crucial role as drivers of the economy. The arts and culture sector, in addition to enriching lives, has the power to generate employment opportunities, promote tourism, and bolster local businesses. The move underscores the government’s commitment to nurturing a dynamic and thriving societal landscape.
Expressing gratitude for the federal support, Stéphane Lavoie, General and Programming Director of TOHU, underscored the importance of this funding in enabling the organization to meet broadcasting costs and further position Montréal as a global hub for circus arts. The investment in projects like the Festival Montréal Complètement Cirque is praised not only for its economic impact but for the broader benefits it brings to the local community.
Budget 2024, besides focusing on cultural investments, also emphasizes creating a fairer and more equitable society for all generations. The government’s tax fairness plan, including adjustments to capital gains taxes, is projected to generate substantial new revenue that will enable transformative investments in housing, health care, education, childcare, and infrastructure at the provincial and territorial levels.
As Patricia Lattanzio, MP for Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel, aptly pointed out, such initiatives not only foster job creation and support tourism but also play a fundamental role in community development. The ongoing commitment to cultural advancement and community well-being underscores the government’s dedication to building a stronger, more inclusive Canada where every generation can thrive.
