Headline: Canada Celebrates World Refugee Day with Global Solidarity and Resettlement Commitments
Globally, millions of refugees were honored and supported on World Refugee Day as Canada reaffirmed its commitment to providing sanctuary and opportunities for those in need, with a focus on resettlement efforts in Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific. With the global refugee population reaching 43.4 million in 2023, Canada continues to stand out as one of the top refugee resettlement countries.
In a joint statement released by Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, the ministers highlighted the growing challenges faced by refugees globally due to persecution, conflict, and natural disasters. They emphasized the importance of showing solidarity with refugees and finding sustainable solutions to their plight.
Canada’s resettlement commitments entail the safe relocation of refugees identified by the UN Refugee Agency and other partners. Over the next three years, Canada plans to welcome 12,000 refugees each from Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region. Additionally, the country will continue to resettle refugees from the Americas and support vulnerable populations, including human rights defenders.
In collaboration with private groups, Canada is set to welcome over 27,000 refugees through sponsorship programs this year. Notably, partnerships with organizations such as Rainbow Refugee Society and Rainbow Railroad have facilitated the resettlement of LGBTQI+ refugees and their families, showcasing the country’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Canada’s international assistance efforts include providing $96 million in funding to the UNHCR to address emergency needs of vulnerable populations worldwide. Moreover, investments in capacity-building projects across Latin America and the Caribbean aim to enhance countries’ ability to respond to forced displacement and irregular migration.
Recognizing the invaluable contributions refugees make to their communities, Canada continues to support initiatives for refugee education and protection. A funding of $450,000 has been allocated to support Phase II of the Refugee Education Council, which comprises youth from affected regions working to improve access to quality education.
As Canada acknowledges the ongoing challenges faced by refugees globally, the country remains dedicated to being a beacon of hope and support for those seeking sanctuary and opportunities for a better future. Collaboration with partners both domestically and internationally will ensure continued efforts to provide protection and empowerment to vulnerable communities.
