Canada announces new pilot programs to support caregivers and Canadian families, intends to make the caregivers program permanent

Title: Canada Welcomes Caregivers with New Pathway to Permanent Residence
In a groundbreaking move to honor the essential contributions of caregivers to Canadian families, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has unveiled new and enhanced caregiver pilot programs. These programs aim to provide caregivers with a direct pathway to permanent residence upon their arrival in Canada.
Caregivers from abroad play a vital role in the lives of those they care for, whether it’s children, seniors, or persons with disabilities. The dedication and hard work they bring to their roles are invaluable, and Canada recognizes the significance of their impact.
As the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot draw to a close, the new pilot programs are set to revolutionize the caregiving sector in Canada. Caregivers will now have the opportunity to work for organizations offering part-time care to people who are semi-independent or in recovery, while securing permanent resident status upon arrival.
The new pathway to permanent residence marks a significant milestone in Canada’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its diverse population. Minister Marc Miller emphasized the importance of supporting caregivers and providing families with the quality care they deserve.
Minister Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business, echoed the sentiment by stating, “After hearing stories and feedback from caregivers across Canada, I am proud that we are taking concrete action to create policies to support the caregiver community. Now is the time to return the care they deserve.”
In alignment with the 2024–2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada aims to welcome over 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents. Since the launch of the previous caregiver pilot programs in 2019, nearly 5,700 caregivers and their families have already obtained permanent resident status, demonstrating Canada’s commitment to recognizing their invaluable contributions.
With the launch of these new caregiver pilot programs, caregivers can look forward to finding meaningful work with reputable employers and seamless access to permanent resident status. More information, including eligibility criteria and application details, will be available in due course to ensure a smooth transition for caregivers entering Canada.
