‘He was our village healer’: L’Arche Homefires mourns founder John MacNeil

Irish Charm: The Inspirational Life of John MacNeil and L’Arche Homefires
From a bleak beginning in Cape Breton, N.S., where his future seemed destined for despair, John MacNeil defied all odds to leave an indelible mark on the world. Born in 1956 with Down syndrome, a time when society deemed such individuals as better off hidden away, John’s parents made a courageous choice to keep him at home alongside his sister Florence, who also had the condition.
Tragedy struck when John lost his parents at a young age, and he was separated from Florence, placed in the harsh confines of Mountain View Home in Waterville, N.S. But his story takes a remarkable turn when he crosses paths with Jeff Moore, a social worker who saw the beauty in John that was hidden behind locked doors and bleak conditions.
Despite enduring years in institutions, John’s resilience shone through when he met Keith Strong, a fellow individual with Down syndrome, who became his lifelong companion. Together with the guidance of Moore and his wife, the trio laid the foundation of L’Arche Homefires in Wolfville, N.S. in 1981, a beacon of hope and inclusivity for those with intellectual disabilities.
Through his infectious Irish charm and unwavering spirit, John became a community leader, embracing life with gusto by donning sharp outfits, enjoying a cold beer, and dancing the night away with friends. His presence at Applewicks, the community’s candle shop, brought joy to all as he worked diligently while spreading laughter and mischief in equal measure.
In his later years, John’s artistic talents and unwavering friendship touched the lives of many, with his ability to comfort and heal others through silent companionship likened to that of a village healer. Even in his final moments, surrounded by loved ones, he exuded a sense of peace and contentment as he transitioned from this world, leaving behind a legacy of light and love.
The passing of John MacNeil at the age of 68 may have dimmed his physical presence, but his spirit continues to shine brightly, illuminating the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. In the words of William Shakespeare, “How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world.” John’s light will undoubtedly continue to guide and inspire generations to come.
