Title: Canada Day Celebrations Emphasize Unity, Reconciliation, and Diversity
Toronto, July 1, 2024 – As Canada celebrates its national holiday, the message echoed by the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, is one of unity, reconciliation, and diversity.
On this Canada Day, citizens are encouraged to reflect on their freedoms, rights, and responsibilities as Canadian citizens, while also honoring the shared history and values that define the nation. A significant part of being Canadian involves understanding and respecting the histories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, who have long been stewards of this land.
Minister Miller emphasized the importance of advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, highlighting the need for all Canadians to recognize and appreciate the rights and significant roles of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.
As part of the ongoing effort to promote reconciliation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada collaborated with Indigenous creators to produce a video, titled ‘Welcome, there is room’, which is now being showcased at citizenship ceremonies nationwide.
In a special ceremony held at the Rogers Centre before the Toronto Blue Jays’ annual Canada Day game, Minister Miller had the privilege of witnessing newcomers take their oath of citizenship, describing it as a profoundly moving experience. He encouraged all Canadians to attend citizenship ceremonies to experience the pride of becoming Canadian firsthand.
With celebrations happening across the country, Canadians are invited to participate in events near them and learn more about Indigenous Peoples and cultures. Minister Miller underscored that Canada’s strength lies in its diversity, equity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism, setting it apart on the global stage.
Ultimately, Canada Day serves as a reminder of what unites Canadians: their shared love and respect for the country. The day is about celebrating unity, pride, and the welcoming spirit that defines Canada’s identity.
As the nation marks this special day, may it inspire citizens to give back to their communities, to embrace diversity, and to extend a warm welcome to those who have chosen Canada as their new home.
From unity to reconciliation, diversity to pride, Happy Canada Day!
