Title: Canada Introduces Enhanced Caregiver Programs for Immediate Permanent Residency
Toronto, June 3, 2024 – Caregivers from abroad are the unsung heroes of Canadian families, making a significant impact on the lives of those they support, be it children, seniors, or individuals with disabilities. As the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot near their conclusion this month, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced groundbreaking new caregiver pilot programs aimed at granting immediate permanent residence upon arrival in Canada. The enhanced caregiver programs will revolutionize the home care sector by offering caregivers the opportunity to secure permanent resident status as soon as they set foot in the country. They will also have the flexibility to work for organizations providing temporary or part-time care to semi-independent or recovering individuals. This initiative streamlines the process for caregivers to find stable employment with reputable employers, ensuring they have a clear pathway to permanent residency from the get-go.
Under the new pilot programs, candidates interested in working in Canada’s home care industry must meet specific criteria to be eligible for immediate permanent residence upon arrival. These game-changing initiatives mark a significant stride forward in addressing the changing home care demands of Canada’s diverse population. More information, including eligibility requirements and application procedures, will be available closer to the full launch of the pilot programs.
Minister Miller expressed his support for caregivers, emphasizing the crucial role they play in Canadian families and how these new pilots will strengthen support for caregivers while delivering the quality care families deserve. Minister Rechie Valdez also applauded the government’s proactive stance in supporting caregivers and honoring their contributions to families across Canada.
In June 2014, Canada had over 60,000 individuals in the Live-in Caregiver Program inventory. Presently, less than 1% of that inventory remains, showcasing the evolution and success of caregiver programs in the country. As part of the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada aims to welcome over 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents. Since the launch of the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot in 2019, almost 5,700 caregivers and their families have obtained permanent residency status as of April 30, 2024.
