Trudeau calls Poilievre’s stance on Chinese EV tariffs ‘baloney’

Trudeau Slams Conservative Leader for Lack of Electric Vehicle Support as Goodyear Announces Major Investment
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau didn’t hold back when it came to criticizing federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre on Monday during a funding announcement at Goodyear’s tire plant in Napanee, Ont. Trudeau accused Poilievre of failing to support investments in the electric vehicle sector, in contrast to the government’s commitment to growth and sustainability.
Goodyear Canada revealed its plan to pour $575 million into expanding and modernizing the plant with the aim of achieving net-zero status in less than twenty years. The federal government is contributing $44.3 million, with an additional $20 million from Ontario’s government. Trudeau emphasized that the enhanced production at the plant will include tires tailored for electric vehicles.
During a Q&A session following the announcement, Trudeau sidestepped a query about imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, instead directing his attention towards Poilievre’s stance on EV investments. He mocked Poilievre’s sudden interest in auto industry workers, asserting that the Conservatives’ track record shows a lack of support for such initiatives.
In response, the Conservatives criticized Trudeau’s approach, alleging that his policies have weakened the economy over the past nine years. Kyle Seeback, the Conservative labour critic, highlighted concerns about foreign workers and investments leaving Canada under Trudeau’s leadership.
The spotlight has also been on Poilievre’s silence regarding the fate of government investments in the EV sector should the Conservatives take office. Despite previous skepticism towards certain investments, Poilievre has not clarified his stance on maintaining support for the industry.
Trudeau concluded the event by highlighting recent collaborations with major players in the EV sector, including Honda, Stellantis, and Northvolt. This news conference marked his first direct engagement with reporters in a month, showcasing the government’s steadfast commitment to fostering growth and innovation.
