Statement by Minister Miller on Canada Day

Toronto, July 1, 2024—In a heartfelt Canada Day message, Minister Marc Miller of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship echoed the importance of celebrating the freedoms and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship while emphasizing the need for reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
“Today, as we mark Canada Day, let us reflect on our rights and duties as Canadian citizens,” Minister Miller stated. “We must pay tribute to the shared history, symbols, and values that shape our Canadian identity. It is crucial for us to understand and acknowledge the profound contributions and legacies of Indigenous Peoples, who have safeguarded this land for generations.”
Minister Miller emphasized the significance of advancing reconciliation efforts with Indigenous Peoples and fostering a deeper understanding of their rights and heritage. As part of the government’s commitment to reconciliation, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship collaborated with Indigenous creators to incorporate Indigenous voices and experiences into citizenship ceremonies nationwide. The video ‘Welcome, there is room’ is now an integral part of every citizenship ceremony across the country.
Attending a special citizenship ceremony at the Rogers Centre before the Toronto Blue Jays’ annual Canada Day game, Minister Miller expressed his pride in witnessing newcomers taking their oath of citizenship. Encouraging all Canadians to participate in citizenship ceremonies in their communities, he invited individuals to visit the Canadian Heritage website for information on local Canada Day celebrations.
In his closing remarks, Minister Miller urged Canadians to embrace diversity, equity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism as defining features of Canada’s richness. He encouraged citizens to learn more about Indigenous Peoples, welcome newcomers, and contribute to their communities, embodying the spirit of unity on Canada Day.
