CFL reinstates Toronto Argonauts QB Chad Kelly with conditions

Argos QB Chad Kelly Cleared for Comeback Following CFL Reinstatement with Special Conditions
In a stunning turn of events, Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly has been given the green light to return to the field after being reinstated by the CFL under specific conditions. The CFL reinstated Kelly on a “last-chance agreement,” requiring him to meet ongoing conditions to uphold league standards.
The league’s decision comes after Kelly, the reigning CFL’s most outstanding player, was suspended on May 7 for violating the CFL’s gender-based violence policy. His suspension included missing Toronto’s two exhibition games and at least the first nine regular-season contests.
“The ongoing mandatory conditions surrounding Mr. Kelly’s reinstatement reflect the need for him to demonstrate a continued commitment to upholding league standards,” the CFL stated in a release. While the specific conditions are confidential, the league emphasized the importance of Kelly showcasing his dedication to improving himself.
The suspension stemmed from an independent investigation into a lawsuit filed against Kelly for sexual harassment by a former strength-and-conditioning coach, along with allegations of wrongful dismissal by the Argos. The lawsuit was settled in June through mediation involving all parties.
Argos general manager Mike “Pinball” Clemons expressed his support for Kelly, acknowledging the quarterback’s accountability and commitment to personal growth. Clemons emphasized the team’s dedication to fostering a positive team culture with Kelly’s return.
During his suspension, Kelly underwent confidential assessments and mandatory counseling sessions conducted by gender-based violence experts. The completion of these sessions was a prerequisite for the CFL to consider reinstating Kelly, with the league reserving the right to modify his discipline as needed.
Following a 39-25 victory over Calgary, marking the team’s ninth regular-season game, the Argos took to the practice field for the first time since a bye week. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie indicated that Kelly participated in roughly 70% of the starting offense snaps in Sunday’s practice, with plans to increase his workload leading up to the upcoming game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
While Dinwiddie acknowledged the challenges of integrating Kelly back into gameplay with limited practice time, he expressed confidence in the quarterback’s abilities. The head coach left the possibility open for a shared quarterbacking approach, potentially splitting reps among Kelly and the team’s other QBs.
Kelly’s return marks a significant moment for the Argonauts, as they look to build on their success from last season under his leadership. With Kelly back in the mix,
