Toronto, July 1, 2024 – In a heartfelt Canada Day message, The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, highlighted the importance of celebrating freedoms while reflecting on the responsibilities that come with Canadian citizenship.
“As we commemorate Canada Day, we honor the shared history, symbols, and values that bind us together as Canadians,” Minister Miller stated. He emphasized the crucial role of understanding and respecting the histories and realities of Indigenous Peoples, who have long been stewards of the land and hold an integral place in the past, present, and future of the country.
Minister Miller stressed the significance of advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and recognizing their rights and contributions. In line with this commitment, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship collaborated with Indigenous creators to incorporate the voices and experiences of Indigenous Peoples into the citizenship process for new Canadians. The Minister proudly announced the incorporation of the video ‘Welcome, there is room’ in citizenship ceremonies nationwide.
The day was marked by special citizenship ceremonies across Canada, including one held at the Rogers Centre ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Canada Day game. Minister Miller expressed his deep gratification in witnessing individuals take their oath of citizenship, describing it as a profoundly meaningful experience. He encouraged all Canadians to attend a citizenship ceremony to feel the pride and sense of community that comes with being Canadian.
To engage in Canada Day celebrations and learn more about Indigenous Peoples and cultures, Minister Miller directed the public to visit the Canadian Heritage website. He encouraged all Canadians, whether long-standing residents or recent arrivals, to embrace the country’s diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism, which he described as defining characteristics of Canada.
In his closing remarks, Minister Miller wished everyone a “Happy Canada Day!” and urged individuals to use the occasion to give back to their communities and celebrate the love and respect they hold for the country.
The festivities on Canada Day served as a powerful reminder of the unity and diversity that define Canada and underscored the ongoing commitment to reconciliation and inclusivity.
